Supermom Had A Birthday

Happy Birthday to me! Today I turned 32 and I celebrated all week. I’m so glad I’m back to an even numbered age. Does anyone else prefer even numbers? My hubby sent me flowers. He bought me tiramisu & fruit tarts. He put the girls to  bed and let me rest. Can birthday week be every week of the year??!

I was most excited about the weekend. Friday I got my first blowout since I’ve been natural. For my non natural followers, that means that I have been rocking the curly look for two years. I haven’t used any chemicals to straighten my hair, or heat. Friday night, I paid a beautician to wash, trim, color, blow dry & flat iron my hair. I thought it looked pretty fabulous.

I made the mistake of stepping into the night air and going into Ulta after my blowout. I could see my hair growing and drinking the humidity. Friday night and all day Saturday,  I wrapped my hair in a scarf, but alas, my hair sweated out the blowout.

So, back to my curls I went. I was disappointed because I’d been planning my look for weeks. Justin reminded me that he thought I looked beautiful, and we had a date night without the kids. Sometimes we need someone to remind us not to sweat the small stuff (no pun intended). On the way out, the hostess told us how much she enjoys seeing us. She loves seeing couples that are different (interracial couples). My husband said that we see it as normal, but other people see it as a “thing.”

Today, my Mother in Law made a fabulous lunch and my girls presented me with my Minnie Mouse cake.

I attended my first natural hair show with two of my friends. My favorite part was visiting the vendor tables. I bought a few new products that I can’t wait to try. Eden Body Works had several of their products for only $6! I bought a gel to try on Melody. I’ve started using gel on her hair, otherwise she has flyaways and her hair looks crazy by the end of the day. I’ll be doing a review of that soon to let you know what I think.

The Natural Girls Rock was probably my favorite vendor. The ambassadors were personable & very knowledgeable. We swapped tips on hair styling and I bought some nice gear.

I even scored a Natural Girls Rock button that I am so proudly wearing.

If you all ever attend an event, I would recommend the following:

  1. Network, network, network! One of the vendors, Organitude, gave me some free samples, simply because I mentioned that I was a blogger. Thanks to their generosity, I’ll be reviewing their products soon! And did I mention that their products are all natural, with no fillers?
  2. Mingle, mingle, mingle! Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and talk with people that you didn’t come with.
  3. Ask questions. They had a panel of various natural hair experts (bloggers, beauticians, brand ambassadors) available for a question and answer session. I put myself out there and asked why my blowout didn’t last longer than 24 hours. I got several stares of pity, but I got my answer-wait until the winter!
  4. Have fun! Whether it’s a work event, or an event just for fun, enjoy yourself! I brought two of my girlfriends with me. We laughed, mingled, talked and had an amazing time.

Tomorrow is Monday, back to the grind. I ended the night in my new pjs. My girls are too young to know who Wonder Woman is, but they sure think I’m Super mom. I think I sometimes put pressure on myself to be supermom. I think all my family wants is for me to be present. Okay, and maybe a meal or two and some cuddle time. I think I can handle that. I didn’t have to milk my birthday this year because my family and friends pulled out all the stops. I can’t wait for next year!! What do you like to do on your birthday?

So so fun! Happy birthday! Sounds like your hubby took good care of you, as it should be 😉 Your hair looked lovely with the blowout! Sorry it didn’t last long 😦 I avoid the salon, because usually whatever I do there doesn’t last long either! But always great results, however short-lived! Looks like your girls helped you blow out the candles too – love it 🙂 It’s funny, most of my friends are interracial couples, so I don’t see it as being “different” at all. And your PJs rock!

Happy Belated Birthday! Your weekend sounded amazing! I especially loved your pajamas!!! I know you rarely straighten your hair (it looks fabulous either way) but do you ever worry by straightening it sends a message to your little ones about their curls? My daughter is 2.5, so at this point she has no clue about hair. However, I worry about her loving her curls and being proud of her hair. Any thing that you do with your sweet little ones to be proud of their hair?

Thank you! This is the first time I’ve straightened my hair in the year 1/2 I’ve been natural. I will probably only do it once or twice a year to avoid damage to my curls. I tell them that they have curly hair like mommy & we read books like I Am Mixed and Big Hair Don’t Care to invoke self love 😉

Happy belated birthday! Another September birthday here (I turned 32 as well!) 🙂 I’ve always liked odd-numbered ages, for some reason, hehe. I’m biracial (and in an interracial relationship too!), and when I was younger people always thought it was okay to call me “different” like it was a compliment or something, so I appreciate you and your husband’s perspective on it! Can’t wait to dig in to the rest of your blog!
